Design and Development of a Hybrid Learning System for MSMEs: A Study on the Implementation of WordPress-Based Microlearning Distributed via WhatsApp Chatbot

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) face significant challenges in accessing conventional training, primarily due to time constraints and the complexity of existing e-learning platforms. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a hybrid learning system that integrates WordPress as the primary Content Management System (CMS) with WhatsApp as a microlearning distribution channel via chatbot. The research employs the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology, encompassing the stages of problem identification, design, development, demonstration, and evaluation. The resulting artifact is a hybrid system architecture that utilizes PHP webhooks and Node.js middleware to automatically distribute microlearning content (videos under five minutes, infographics, and short quizzes) to participants’ WhatsApp accounts daily at 08:00 WIB. Experimental results indicate that this hybrid model is effective in overcoming access barriers. The message open rate (content access) via WhatsApp reached 85%, significantly higher than web-based login access at only 25%. Additionally, the module completion rate reached 78% via WhatsApp, compared to 20% via the web, with 65% of participants actively engaging in quizzes. The study concludes that integrating WhatsApp as a front-end distribution channel is highly effective in increasing MSME learners’ engagement and learning retention due to its simplicity and alignment with their everyday communication patterns.
